American sports channel plans to broadcast e-sports tournaments

04 January 2016 American sports channel plans to broadcast e-sports tournaments

Summing up 2015 American cable sports TV channel ESPN announced its plans to broadcast e-sports events.

The channel already had such an experience in 2015 when it suddenly began to stream   DotA 2 e-sports competitions. The channel broadcasted the final of The International 5 championship. Taking into consideration that this broadcast appeared to be quite popular, ESPN board is considering the possibility to expand its broadcasting network through adding e-sports matches streaming.

“The audience of e-sports tournaments accounts for tens of millions of people from all over the world. It is a vast and mostly uncovered by television group of people. We cannot ignore them,” stated Edward Erhardt, president of ESPN Global Customer Marketing and Sales.

Therefore, the Olympics, that will take place in August, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, will apparently need to compete with e-sports tournaments for attention of viewing audience.
