Esports Acquired the Status of Official Sport: Comments of Politicians and Esports Community Representatives15 September 2020
On September 7, 2020, the event important for the Ukrainian esports and gaming industry took place. Esports was recognized an official sport at the state level. The decision was supported by the majority of members of the specialized commission at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The issue of assigning a new status to esports was raised by the Ukrainian Esports Federation (UESF). This August, the organization submitted to the Ministry of Sports the package of documents required for the Commission for the Recognition of Sports to consider the initiative on adding esports to the list of official sports.

Public authorities and the esports community have positively assessed the news that a new status has been assigned to esports. They spoke about the importance of this decision for the country and the prospects for the industry.
The Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Oleksandr Bornyakov noted that it was a landmark event for Ukraine. The politician thinks that esports has long been a fundamental part of digital culture, which millions of people are fond of.
The UPEA called the decision to assign a new status to esports a great victory and the result of 20 years of work done by all esports market players, enthusiasts, professional and amateur teams.
The organization believes it is a big step towards the great future for esports and the Ukrainian leadership in the global esports market.
The UESF reported that after the approval of the initiative to include esports in the list of official sports, Ukraine could expect the growth in professional activity, educational and social programs, and inflow of investments in the formation and improvement of the esports infrastructure. In the long-term, official competitions and teams will evolve, with the latter engaged in international tournaments, and other positive changes will take place.
The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvii Bidnyi says that it is important to create favorable conditions in Ukraine for the esports community to be able to realize themselves in the chosen field, especially if it helps to improve the country’s image.
The Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Vadym Guttsait emphasizes that thanks to the joint efforts of the state and the esports community, Ukraine will be able to become one of the leaders in the esports market.
