Mika Fan: “Everything began with viewing of cosplay photos online”30 December 2016
The press service of WEGAME met with a girl whose cosplay D.Va from Overwatch game has entered our top and appealed to readers. We spoke with Mika [Buta-kun] Fan about her hobbies and subtleties of Kyiv cosplay community. She also shared the examples of her images and invited everyone to become a member of her cosband!
Interviewer: Lidiya Tsenenko (L.T.)
L.T.: How and when did you start to cosplay? What was the reason for that?
Buta-kun: I have been doing it for more than five years already. Everything began with viewing of cosplay photos online. I liked the way people were putting characters into life, and wanted to try myself in it.
L.T.: Do you usually buy costumes or make them by yourself?
Buta-kun: It depends. When I didn’t have the necessary skills, I had to go to a tailor shop to make costumes. I did not have any experience in tailoring before cosplay.
When it became a serious hobby, I managed to persuade my parents to buy a sewing machine. I searched for patterns on Google. The first costume that I tailored with my own hands wasn’t the best one, but I understood that I really could do it by myself.
L.T.: Please, tell more about your first costume.
Buta-kun: It was made for the New Year’s Eve. The festive party provided a free entrance for those guests who wore thematic costumes. That was the thing that encouraged me and I sewed a simple costume in just 3 hours to dress for the party.
L.T.: Which cosplays do you like most of all?
Buta-kun: I liked Blink from X-Men. I played her character from Days of Future Past.
I also have a favourite anime character. I like her appereance as well as the inner world. Her name is Enma Ai, she is from the Hell Girl series. This is my first fully-fledged cosplay.
There had been 2 attempts before, but in one of the cases I bought the costume, and in the other – I failed to finish it. Therefore, my first successful character is Enma Ai.
L.T.: And what about Overwatch Bunny Cosplay? Was it difficult or did you manage to have fun?
Buta-kun: This photo session was spontaneous for me. My friend Masha Karpenko (Fenix Fatalist) asked me to participate. She also entered the top as Tracer. Masha invited me as far as the person that had to wear the costume could not come. So I had to take the role of D.Va. I was provided with the costume, wig and all other attributes. The shooting process was a real fun, we also filmed it.
L.T.: Was Overwatch Bunny your first group cosplay or did you participate in such events before?
Buta-kun: I worked with unknown people before. Once I was invited to take part in Sailor Moon cosplay. The photo session was scheduled, costumes were ready, but several people refused to participate. It was late to cancel the session – the photographer had already arrived from another city.
It was an outdoor shooting. Although the photos are in warm colors and don’t show this, it was very cold outside in this stockinet costumes. It’s hard to keep a happy face and play the role when you are frozen.
But I often choose a character myself and invite band mates. It also happens that they refuse to participate at the last moment. It frequently occurs in cosplay.
L.T.: Are you an official member of some specific cosband?
Buta-kun: When I just started, I joined the COSWAVE cosband and spent 2-3 years with them. I found them through social media. They had lots of decent cosplays at that time, and I liked their works very much. I was afraid that I would be of no use for them, as I was a beginner. Then I adjusted myself and started playing more and more characters.
But I left eventually. Things were not going the way I imagined that. I was cosplaying without a team for several years. But this year my friend and I have created our own cosband – there are 2 other participants except us. It is called Whatever. We accept all volunteers. The main condition is to truly desire to cosplay.
The interview with Mika turned out to be very replete, and she told us many other things. Wait for the continuation after Christmas holidays. And meanwhile we offer you to get acquainted with some characters from Mika!
